Pontcysyllte Aqueduct - Places of Interest
The imposing structure of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct sits majestically on it's nineteen pillars 126ft above the river Dee in between Chirk and Llangollen.
Thomas Telford opened it in 1805 it took him about 10 years to build it, to carry the canal 1,007 ft across the Dee.It is made of a narrow cast iron trough with a towpath on one side. The canal side is only six inches above the waterline with a frightening unprotected drop to the river below. The height makes many walkers on the towpath hang on to the handrail, and many turn back rather than cross it.The Aqueduct and surrounding area is being considered as a world heritage site.
