Conwy R.S.P.B Reserve was created from the waste from dredging the River Conwy when building the A55 road tunnel across the estuary. The tunnel was started around 1986 till 1991.Concrete box sections where lowered into the excavated trench across the estuary. The waste was dumped on the land and landscaped ,then the reserve was created to compensate for the loss of habitat during construction of the tunnel.
The reserve was opened on the 14th April 1995 and now has a splendid visitor centre, cafe, large pools with hides to watch the many species of birds.Over 200 hundred have been recorded there, and is an important breeding and stopover for migratory birds. It covers over 100 acres with different habitats, including grassland, scrub, reeds, mudflats and saltmarsh.Sitting alongside the Conwy Estuary with the Majestic Conwy Castle in the background makes for a wonderful and relaxing day out for all ages.
